Bringing Retro Gaming to the Table: Introducing the Magic Life Counter by Falk Tattoos

The Magic Life Counter is a simple, reliable way to keep track of life totals during gameplay without slowing things down. Built for players who want something tactile and clean, it replaces scribbled notes and phone apps with a physical tool that just works. Whether you’re playing casually or in a tournament setting, it keeps the focus where it should be—on the game.

At Hand Held Legend, we believe the Game Boy is more than a handheld console—it's a platform for creativity.

Over the years we've seen developers, artists, modders, and makers push classic hardware far beyond what Nintendo originally imagined. From homebrew games and custom firmware to entirely new hardware projects, the retro gaming community continues to find new ways to keep these devices relevant decades later.

That's why we're excited to offer the Magic Life Counter by Falk Tattoos.

Where Retro Gaming Meets Tabletop Gaming

Originally created by tattoo artist, maker, and lifelong nerd Falk Tattoos, the Magic Life Counter transforms a Game Boy into a dedicated life tracker for Magic: The Gathering. What started as a personal project eventually grew into a fully realized product built from the ground up, including the programming, pixel art, cartridge design, and packaging.

Instead of reaching for a phone app or pile of dice, players can track life totals, poison counters, and commander damage directly on original Game Boy hardware. The software supports both Commander and traditional 60-card formats and even allows players to customize colors to match their deck.

Why We Love It

The best homebrew projects solve problems nobody knew needed solving.

A Game Boy-powered Magic life counter sits right at the intersection of two passionate communities: retro gaming and tabletop gaming. It's practical, fun, and just weird enough to make us smile.

More importantly, it's exactly the kind of independent project we want to help bring to a wider audience. The retro gaming scene thrives because creators continue building new experiences for old hardware, and projects like this demonstrate how much life is still left in these classic systems.

Built for Real Hardware

The Magic Life Counter is compatible with:

  • Original Game Boy (DMG)
  • Game Boy Pocket
  • Game Boy Color
  • Game Boy Advance
  • Game Boy Advance SP

Whether you're playing Commander at your local game store or gathering around a kitchen table with friends, there's something uniquely satisfying about putting a piece of retro hardware back into active service.

Supporting the Communities We Love

Hand Held Legend was built around a simple idea: preserving and celebrating gaming hardware through innovation. While our roots are firmly planted in retro gaming, we also recognize that many of our customers are creators, collectors, hobbyists, tabletop gamers, and makers.

Supporting projects like the Magic Life Counter is our way of helping those communities overlap and grow together.

We're proud to partner with independent creators like Falk Tattoos and help make unique products like this available to our customers. If you've ever wanted an excuse to dust off your old Game Boy for something completely unexpected, this might be it.

Because sometimes the best retro gaming projects aren't games at all. Check out the pre-order here!
