About Ultimates
This page is a general FAQ resource and guide for our Ultimate builds and other modded consoles/controllers.
What are Ultimates?
We offer three main options:
Pre-Built Consoles are in-stock, ready to ship, and consistently high quality.
Made-to-Order Builds are themed builds with a 1 to 3 week turnaround.
Build-to-Order Consoles are fully customizable using our interactive builder that prevents part incompatibility. These also ship in 1 to 3 weeks.
Tip: If you're on iPhone, switch to desktop mode to view hover tooltips in the builder.
We currently offer builds for Game Boy Advance (GBA), Game Boy Advance SP (SP), Game Boy Color (GBC), Game Boy Pocket (GBP), ProGCC controller, Nintendo 64 (N64), and GameCube (NGC).
No, consoles are included with your purchase. If you'd prefer to send your own console for service, contact customer support for a custom order.
We start by restoring the console with high-quality, undamaged boards. Corroded or faulty components are rejected. More details are available on our Refurbishment Process page in the Resources tab.
Product Questions
Laminated kits have the lens fused to the screen, keeping it dust-free and providing better clarity but limiting customization.
Non-laminated kits have a separate lens, offering more customization but may attract dust over time.
Most mods come from different manufacturers and may not be compatible with each other. This can lead to issues if mismatched parts are used. This is referred to as mod stacking.
Mod stacking happens when combining mods from various brands. Problems may include power issues, noise, fitment conflicts, or exclusivity limitations. Our builders are designed to help prevent these conflicts.
We tailor our builders to avoid product compatibility issues.
LED kits add slight thickness to the PCB, which can require firmer button presses. Clear membranes and compatible buttons help maintain smooth function.
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. In modding, it refers to original parts made by Nintendo, as opposed to third party reproductions.
Membrane quality varies. Aftermarket membranes are great for color and aesthetics, but some users prefer the OEM feel. We offer swaps for customers who want the original tactile feedback.
Warranty Questions
All Ultimate, Console, and Controller products come with a 90-day warranty from the date of shipment.
The warranty covers defects in parts and workmanship. It does not cover accidental or intentional damage, misuse, or issues caused by user error.
Light bleed is when backlight leaks from the screen edges, often visible on dark backgrounds. It’s common in edge-lit displays like Game Boys. Minor light bleed is considered normal and not covered unless caused by build pressure or a defect.
Contact support@handheldlegend.com right away. If the defect is verified, we’ll initiate the repair, return, or exchange process. For USA customers, return shipping will be covered in cases of verified defects.
Check our YouTube channel for video tutorials and visit the product descriptions or Ultimate/Console/Controller Policy page for return and repair information.
No. Custom, Build-to-Order, and Made-to-Order Ultimates are not eligible for refunds or returns. They are only eligible for defective repairs within the warranty period or for customer-paid repairs outside of warranty.
Only if the defect is confirmed. If no defect is found, shipping is not covered and you will be billed for the return shipment.
