Take your original Game Boy restoration to the next level with the custom built, ultra-efficient and clean power regulator designed in-house by RetroSix.

The CleanPower replaces the original power regulator PCB of the Game Boy with a modern smooth and health power supply.

Perfect if your old power board is dying or dead. Common symptoms include faded screen (lack of or no contrast), failure to load games, freezing or total non-power on conditions.

The original power regulator board is 30 year old technology; it is very inefficient, very unstable and does not do the Game Boy electronics any good.

During our journey of restoration perfection at RetroSix, we reverse engineered and analyzed lots of the Game Boy's original components. The power regulator board was one of the worst parts about the original GameBoy, with various faults.

  • The 5V supply cannot handle the system load and constantly drops. This means the system is running from a heavily rippled and fluctuating power supply
  • The negative voltage line for the LCD is on its limits of current supply and wears away over time, causing a lack of contrast and eventual dead power board
  • The entire regulator PCB is noisy, which injects a lot of unwanted ground noise to the board, causing many issues including audio quality loss
  • Addresses all of those issue, providing a clean, stable and efficient 5V and negative LCD voltage supply to the system to keep the lifespan of your console at it's best.

INCLUDED:

  • 1x CleanPower DMG Regulator

DOCUMENTATION:

  • Install Guide - Simply de-solder the old power regulator wires and solder them in the same order to the CleanPower.

NOTES:

  • Created by RetroSix.
  • The input range of the CleanPower on VIN is 2.5V to 12V. This gives modders a much wider range if they want to install 2S lipo kits!

Good but with limitations

This clean power regulator has problems to handle voltage only when you have the combo "backlight+everdrive". Your Gameboy cant boot the system, original regulator has no problem, tested with same batteries & everdrive in another Gameboy with same configuration. In other scenarios works flawlessly.

Better audio and likely fixed a flash cart issue.

I believe this fixed some programming issues with a flash cart I'm using (Everdrive GB Pro REV B). Added some scope plots of the original and cleanpower 5V rail (AC coupled, 50mV/div). In my view it was worth it for my issue, but I could see people not wanting to solder if what they have works. In my engineering opinion the original power supply is a poor, cheap, and old type of design. The cleanpower board is how we design modern low power converters and it shows in scope plots and performance.

boring stuff unless you need one!

My DMG-01 went dead a few weeks ago. There was no sound or picture, just the glowing red LED. There was no obvious indicator of failed capacitors or other damaged parts, so I just guessed it was something on this board.

You should desolder the wires from the old board with a wick or a solder sucker so that you can just connect the new board to the same wires. It was reasonably easy to do this and the DMG-01 came back to life after this board was installed. It was a little tough stuffing the new board back in without breaking the connections I'd just soldered. Some pictures or instructions would have been nice, considering the HUGE price markup($20 for

The solder mask is extremely thin and can scrape/burn away if you ever need to desolder the board. Not reusable and make sure the orientation is correct because you may only have one shot the first time you install. The wires should be inserted on the component side and soldered from the empty side.

Fixed Power Issue for my GB DMG RIPS IPS and EZ Flash Jr

I recently installed a RIPS IPS display in my GB DMG and bought an Ez flash Jr flash cart. When turning on the game boy, the screen would stutter and go black on the Nintendo logo for a millisecond or so. It would also do this when booting up games sometimes. It especially did this with the screen brightness turned up higher. I was always able to continue playing, but thought that this can't be good and might get progressively worse. After doing some research, I found that replacing the power regulator board may fix this issue so I purchased this cleanpower board. Need to know how to solder just a little bit but it was a straight forward install with perfect fitment. Just make sure you solder the wires in the correct orientation and side too. Otherwise, it won't fit back in your gb shell. My game boy dmg works perfectly now and the stutter and drop during bootup and loading games went away completely. I heard that I may get better battery life too but haven't been able to test that. Either way, I'm extremely satisfied and happy with this product. My game boy dmg is perfect now!
