    WARNINGS:

    • Test before installation! When you receive a backlight/LCD kit, you should perform a dry run before installing to assure that nothing has been damaged in transit. A dry run or test fit means the kit is not installed in the shell. This includes the use of adhesives, brackets, and any performed soldering. All ribbon cables should have no bends or creases in them. If you are unsure how to perform a dry run, please contact our support team and we will be happy to help. Backlight kits that have been installed are not eligible for replacement or return.

Great mod! ... with a few issues

Overall, this mod works exactly as described which is actually quite incredible. If you have any desire to do some video capture or to play on your TV without getting a consolizer, this product is perfect.

That said, I ran into a some difficulties during install and have one or two gripes about some weird interactions. For context, I added this to a game boy advance with a laminated IPS kit from funny playing which has one of the rectangular clear brackets that that stabilizes the screen to the shell.

The main issue during install was that the bracket is too thick, I had to shave about half of its thickness on the side that sits at the top of the screen in order to get the PCB to fit in between the screen and the motherboard. It also meant that there was barely any space for the ribbon cables and while everything appears to be working, I'm a little concerned at how sharply I had to fold the cables.

But hey, if you don't mind getting a little dirty with some flush cutters, this mod is totally doable. For context, I have barely any soldering experience and learned how to last week while installing the IPS kit.

There are two issues that I'm having after install, but it's not clear whether it's the HDMI mod, the IPS screen, or possibly a power issue. On specific games, particularly GBC games, every time the HDMI signal is disconnected the game boy restarts. At first I thought this might be an issue with the physical port but I found that it doesn't happen on GBA games and the device will restart even if the cable is disconnected from the side of the TV. I also consider that this might be related to the GBC resolution, however, switching the game to the wider aspect ratio before disconnecting also doesn't help. Help. I did notice that if I disconnect the cable very, very slowly, sometimes the game boy advance won't restart but I couldn't do it consistently enough to identify a root cause.

The other issue that I'm having is the HDMI audio appears to be transmitting some static. I thought this might be related to a sound interference issue caused by electronics that are in the game but it only happens with HDMI output, not with the onboard speaker.

That's not to say that any of these issues are directly caused by this product, it may be other components interacting with this mod, however, it's worth to know what you might be getting into. Just want to be clear that despite these small issues, console and the mod are still very usable.

Fantastic mod with a few small issues

This has to be my new favorite mod to show off to people. The HDMI is clean and has no noticeable input lag. That doesn't mean it won't have some small problems though. The GBA uses a 3:2 aspect ratio for games and it appears as though the HDMI slightly squashes the output to be 4:3. I didn't notice it on every game, but sometimes circles looked a bit more like vertical ellipses (See the pokeball in the image). The stereo audio, while crisp and clean even without an amp, was inverted. The 2 wires were hooked up correctly and I couldn't find documentation on what would happen if they were mismatched, so your mileage may vary. Small issue as I can just swap my TV's left and right audio outputs or play with mono. The install wasn't too bad but the HDMI board is a tight fit with 40 pin IPS kits. I have the V2 IPS from HHL and I had to stretch and mash the ribbon cable to get it to barely reach the connector on the HDMI board. However, if you are decent with soldering, the two audio wires and the 3 IPS wires (brightness) are no big deal. Modding the shell was super easy, just go slow and steady with a file and your hole will look like it was meant to be there.
Overall, I am pleased with this mod despite its few issues, and I would recommend it to any hardcore GBA enthusiast.
EDIT: Since I have had ample time with this mod, I've noticed that the aspect ratio difference may depend on your display. I've found that my computer monitor displays the ratio correctly and so it may differ for others and what display they use as well.

    Awesome.

Easy to install, you get a clean 720p signal, and it's just fun. I use it on hotel TVs when I'm traveling for work. I absolutely recommend this to anyone.
