Developed under the name "Project Mercury", the Game Gear was the primary competition to the Game Boy, the Atari Lynx and the TurboExpress.

It shared much of its hardware with the Master System, and can play Master System games by use of an adapter. Sega positioned the Game Gear, which had a full-color backlit screen with a landscape format, as a technologically superior handheld to the Game Boy.

The Game Gear was notorious for bad capacitors, which means almost no Game Gears exist in the wild that work without repair.

9/12/23 - It has come to our attention that for VA4 models, when doing a recap of motherboard, power board, and audio board, three more 100uF caps are needed than this kit currently contains. Please plan accordingly for these three missing caps.

This kit comes with all the capacitors needed to fix most versions of your Game Gear:

  • VA1
  • VA4 (missing three 100uF caps for complete cap replacement)
  • VA5

Soldering skills required, small components may be difficult for beginners. Simply remove all old aluminium capacitors from the board, and install the same value capacitors in their place.

Installation instructions can be found for this kit below:

RetroSix Sega Game Gear capacitor kit - All versions

Replace all 10uF and 4.7uF capacitors with 10uF surface mount capacitors.

NOTE: This kit now comes with 1000uF instead of 820uF.

It worked!

The instructions were straight forward for my VA1 Game Gear. Never soldered before this and didn't have the best looking circuit boards at the end, but it worked. Before the repair, just the red light came on - no video, no audio. After the repair, everything worked like it used to.

Not enough extras

I bought this kit with the goal to recap my game gear, but one of the 1uF capacitors broke in half when I was soldering it on. This kit only comes with two and two are required to recap a VA0 model, so I ended up making my console worse than it was before.

Good Capacitor Kit, Cut Recap Time Down to 1/3, "Chong" electrolytic for the power board?

Overall, I liked this capacitor kit, it cut my recap time down to 1/3, much easier using the SMD capacitors over the electrolytic. My only criticism for the kit is, the 3 capacitors for the power board are "Chong" branded Chinese capacitors, these of which, don't have a good reputation for handling the stated voltage ratings. Despite this fact, the GG worked perfectly after the recap. I would like to see some good quality electrolytic capacitors for the power board in the future, this is the only reason I'm giving this kit 4 instead of 5 stars.

great replacement for standard caps

brings the game gear back to 100% functioning and is worth every penny. not for the faint of heart with soldering and make sure you avoid the thermal resistors on both sides of the cfl tube or they will blow due to any heat exposure
