DOCUMENTATION:

NOTES:

  • The display area on the LCD is slightly smaller than the original so a TFT lens must be used to mask properly.
  • Foam adhesive is not required if using either spacer set. You may use either 3D printed spacers or acrylic spacers depending on preference.
  • After installation, if it is noted that your touch sensor is overly sensitive or is cycling, please see this article for assistance.
  • The touch sensor can be placed near the top of the console near the IR data transfer window.

WARNINGS:

  • Test before installation! When you receive a backlight/LCD kit, you should perform a dry run before installing to assure that nothing has been damaged in transit. A dry run or test fit means the kit is not installed in the shell. This includes the use of adhesives, brackets, and any performed soldering. All ribbon cables should have no bends or creases in them. If you are unsure how to perform a dry run, please contact our support team and we will be happy to help. Backlight kits that have been installed are not eligible for replacement or return.
  • LCD may break if put under too much pressure or dropped. Please exercise extreme caution when installing.
  • Damage to console or LCD may occur if you do not trim the cartridge port pins. Exercise caution when trimming pins, wear eye protection to protect from pin debris when cutting the metal. Damage caused by these pins are not covered under our return or exchange policy. Trim the pins of your Gameboy's cartridge slot flat so that they don't interfere with any parts of the kit. We also recommend placing some Kapton tape over the trimmed pins to prevent any shorts.

Super easy for a first-timer.

I had never done any console mods before, but I recently got an itch to put a backlit screen into my old GBC that’s mostly been sitting in storage for years. I haven’t soldered electronics since high school about 15 years ago, so I didn’t want to dive into soldering anything for my first ever mod attempt.

After doing a bit of research, I came across this screen and decided to give it a shot. I bought the lens to match, as other reviewers had noted the visible white spaces around the screen if you keep the original GBC lens.

The screen was super easy to install, especially with HHL’s video that walks you through the whole thing. The whole project took me a little over an hour. But that’s because I had to learn how to remove the old screen and lens, then how to install the new ones. I also swapped in new buttons and pads. If I were to do this again, I’d say it would take me about 20 minutes. I’m sure an experienced modder would need even less time.

Once it was all installed and tested, of course I threw in Link’s Awakening DX. The screen looks great! The colors really pop. The touch sensor to adjust the brightness works great, and it’s just a cool little feature to have. It’s also worth noting that the lens made for this screen fits it perfectly. At only a couple bucks, I’d say it’s a vital addition to this screen. Really ties the Game Boy together.

Additionally, HHL shipped my stuff out the next morning, and it arrived maybe 3 or 4 days after I placed the order. To any first-timers like me who are just starting out with Game Boy mods, I’d highly recommend this purchase.

Super Easy, Not Cut, Drop In

Super Easy, Not Cut, Drop In
Best way to describe it. It took me longer to clean the gamer funk off the shell and MB than it did to install this mod. Remove your old screen and place this in. Simple as that.

Cool Screen that Buzzes

Has a pretty annoying buzzing sound on all brightness levels besides full on and full off... It's noticeable until the volume is up to about 50%. Might try the clean power board, but I wish it worked without it. Besides that, I've been enjoying the screen. Installation was easy and IR port is still usable w/touch sensor if you move the touch sensor a bit.

Relatively easy to install

I got this kit because I wanted to upgrade the screen on my GBC. The installation was pretty easy. Although the part about bending the ribbon was a bit confusing at first. But once I figured that part out, it was pretty straightforward. Not having to solder or mod the case was why this kit was selected. And it has worked as expected thus far.

GBC TFT LCD

display not as bright or richly colored as the IPS version. However it is cheaper and much easier to install. It is also does obviously outperform the original hardware in the same criteria. It is also smaller then both the original display and the IPS displays.
