*11/26/24 - It has come to our attention that our newest stock of boards had a resistor placed in the wrong area. If you have purchased one prior to this date, your board may be affected by this, and the module will not function. If you are confident in small component soldering, please see product photos to see where this resistor was placed and the area to the left it needs to be moved to (under the right battery contact). If you are unable to solder, please reach out to support so we may begin an exchange.

Designed and tested in the UK by a reputable modder and builder, the RetroSix/Hand Held Legend CleanJuice XL for Game Boy DMG is the ultimate upgrade to your console. Adds 11.1 watts of power (compared to 2 watt for the largest AA batteries available) giving you almost 6 times the game time!

FEATURES:

  • Charge at any time using a regular USB C cable, and even reverse charge the console from your phone if it supports power share. That means you can charge your GB while you are out, using your phone battery.
  • Connect battery to CleanJuice board (only fits in one way)
  • If your shell is a RetroSix IPS modified shell, no need to do anything. If it's regular shell, you will need to trim the 3 battery line stumps at the bottom of the battery compartment where the AA batteries usually go so that its flat.
  • Place battery into shell with the wire coming out at the bottom left corner, and the battery pushing the top left spring in.
  • Push the battery down at the bottom end.
  • Place the CleanJuice board on top of battery and push the springs down to make contact with top battery springs. The other 3 shell battery springs need to be removed.
  • Pair with a USB-C battery cover for the DMG (sold separately)
  • You can also cut a hole for the USB-C port using a 4mm drill bit and drill 3 holes in the center of the battery cover as shown in the image.
  • Put the back cover on the console, and you are ready to go.
  • Give the CleanJuice a full charge and enjoy hours of gaming! Check out this article to see how long it could last.

INCLUDED:

  • 1x Lithium ion rechargeable battery (11.1 watts)
  • 1x Cleanjuice PCB

PAIRS WELL WITH:

NOTES:

  • Port on CleanJuice modules will rest at opening of battery cover. This means you do not insert the port into the opening but it sits flush with the cover.
  • 8/5/24 - Currently not compatible with Robot_Retro Power Regulator.
  • Created by RetroSix.

Light Indicator Key:

  • If the PG labeled light on the board is on, this means the USB cable is providing power to the system. This also means you can power your console from the USB without draining the battery - plug and play option.
  • If the CHRG labeled light on the board is on, this means the USB is charging the battery. When it goes off, the battery is fully charged.
  • Both indicator lights will be on when module is charging. When module is fully charged, only the PG light will remain.
  • If you connect a USB cable and the PG light does not turn on, your cable or power supply are faulty.

Great product with only a couple flaws

As a person who has recently gotten into mods, this CleanJuice XL with the related products of a pre-trimmed shell and battery cover is by far one of the simplest and most impactful mods you can do. The battery life with this even with a Gameboy running a power-hungry IPS screen is very good. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this.

However there are a couple reasons I'm not giving this 5 stars. First (and this is pretty minor), the low battery indicator on the Gameboy no longer functions as I believe the battery will always output a constant voltage until it dies, unlike AA batteries whose voltage drops as they get closer to death. The other bigger issue to me is I've noticed the battery has a tendency to self-discharge, so if you leave your DMG alone for a couple days the battery will likely be dead and need a recharge. If there's anything that can be done to prevent/fix these issues it would easily be a 5 star product! And regardless I still would recommend especially with power-hungry mods and flashcarts.

One last very minor negative is the actual charging port is in an awkward location due to obvious limitations of a drop-in kit and the battery compartment. I would love either an option or separate product that's perhaps a bit more involved that allows users to locate the charging port on one of the sides of the Gameboy.

Be very careful

The mod works, but caused a lithium fire at my house.
Nothing too grave due to having everything at home for a proper lithium fire/smoke response, but it deserves to be explained.

The design choices made for this product are very strange.
I had to put, and remove multiple times the PCB and battery, and this is where the problems appear.
The USB-C positioned in such a way that opening the battery case will twist it, potentially desoldering it from the PCB.
Due to it getting stuck, you have to remove the whole Battery+PCB if you want to remove the mod.
However, the battery being under the PCB, it risks being punctured everytime you try to get it out.
And this is what happened : after a few times of removing, and putting again (which i needed to do for debugging purposes), the battery got punctured, and started smoking.

I do not understand why this mod is designed in this way.
The battery should be able to be removed without the use of force, tools, and/or pulling.
Right now, the way it is, is : either you take the risk of ripping your USB-C port off the board, or you risk having your battery punctured.

So, if you buy this mod : be careful. Lithium batteries are a whole other lever of danger if handled improperly.

I'm sorry to hear of the issue. Please contact us at support@handheldlegend.com so we may resolve this for you.

Works, but...

The hissing sound it makes is disconcerting, and changes tone if you touch it. Installing was a hassle, no because of the shell clipping, but that you can over clip the bottom ones and it makes it very difficult to close properly. I had to use a Wedge to get it to align. Also, and maybe as a result of the last part, but the battery cover bulges a bit. No of them are big deals, I think... but had I known about the hiss and such, I would have just got rechargeable AAs and called it a day.

So far, so good

This is a great offering if you don't want to be bothered with double A batteries anymore. The compartment mods needed weren't too bad for a novice with a Dremel

Awesome

So far, perfect! Great fit and easy to install with funnyplaying case that is designed for this. Just remember to remove the old AA contacts before closing the shell line I didn't. I installed this on Tuesday evening, charged to full And have been paint all week, played and beat all my old favorites (done multiple times), played and tried a ton of other games and have not needed a charge yet and it's now Sunday. This is with a funnyplaying ips screen and a everdrive gb x5. Plus usb-c charging??

No more batteries

Bought this instead of the regular version. This size fills the battery compartment a lot better
