WARNINGS:

  • Test before installation! When you receive a backlight/LCD kit, you should perform a dry run before installing to assure that nothing has been damaged in transit. A dry run or test fit means the kit is not installed in the shell. This includes the use of adhesives, brackets, and any performed soldering. All ribbon cables should have no bends or creases in them. If you are unsure how to perform a dry run, please contact our support team and we will be happy to help. Backlight kits that have been installed are not eligible for replacement or return.
  • LCD may break if put under too much pressure or dropped. Please exercise extreme caution when installing.

Aligning bracket?

Is an aligning bracket included? Can one be purchased? Is there a recommended way to modify screen bezel to accommodate larger screen? Thanks!

Do not buy

I bought this kit and it arrived damaged. The company refuses to replace it and accused me of removing some insurance I did not remove. There are several other shops that sell these kits who will replace it if they send you a damaged product instead of accusing you of things and telling you you're just out of luck.

Take my advice, go buy from RetroModding or Retro Game Repair Shop. I decided to give HHL a shot this time and I wish I'd just stuck to the shops I trust.

Thanks for your review! We let you know of our shipping policy in regard to Route Shipping Insurance and removing it from orders. The only way for the insurance to not be on an order is for a customer to manually remove it VIA a toggled button. Unless you hit this button accidentally, there is no way it would not have been on the order if you did not remove it intentionally. It is always added to orders automatically.

As a courtesy, we offered you several solutions which did involve covering most of the cost for a replacement. Route Insurance is added to orders to cover issues such as shipping damage, which is what occurred here. It isn't fair to other customers who have paid for the insurance, to offer a complete replacement to you on an item damaged in shipment without the shipping insurance.

As we mentioned, other modding companies have very similar policies (please look into their policies before purchasing from them) and you may find they will handle a situation like this very similarly. For example, one of the mentioned companies specifically states the following and uses the exact same shipping insurance we do: 'We are not responsible for lost or damage packages! We always highly recommend purchasing our third party Insurance at checkout. It's inexpensive and they make it very simple a quick to make a lost or damage package claim if you need to do so.'

Excellent screen

I had a DMG Game Boy purchased in Russia in 1994 that I brought over to the States. The screen was awful (yellow, with those pesky strips of dead pixels). It was my first Game Boy restoration project and things went without a hitch. The tutorial video for the IPS screen was fantastic and the new screen worked flawlessly. I did not cut out some of the screen to make more room for the 11% larger panel but it's not an issue. Great quality hardware and great experience with handheldlegend.com!

IPS Success!

My childhood GameBoy I've had for over 30 years! It just needed some cleaning and the backlit screen is a much deserved upgrade. The original screen had lots of vertical lines of missing pixels. I'm quite pleased with the results 😁

Unbelievably good screen and customer service

I bought a dmg at a thrift store and the from screen had stuck pixels and horizontal lines I tried a bing of cheap options but I eventually went with this one after all. I am so glad I did, it is absolutely the best option for dmg display. My first one that arrived was faulty but this company has such great customer service that they got back to my problem in one day and shipped out a new one and a screen lens because I misunderstood the product description. This is my favorite website for gameboy modding and restoring supplies.

Works well with optional bracket

The wheel to control the brightness feels a little thin, so I wouldn't use it often. You should probably get the bracket.
