6/26/25 - We have discovered that our stock of kits only contains 13 100uF SMD caps. If you have a VA4 Game Gear, you will need 3 more 100uF caps if you are replacing caps on the main board and audio board. Please reach out to support@handheldlegend.com with your order number and we will include the 3 extra caps in your order.

Developed under the name "Project Mercury", the Game Gear was the primary competition to the Game Boy, the Atari Lynx and the TurboExpress.

It shared much of its hardware with the Master System, and can play Master System games by use of an adapter. Sega positioned the Game Gear, which had a full-color backlit screen with a landscape format, as a technologically superior handheld to the Game Boy.

The Game Gear was notorious for bad capacitors, which means almost no Game Gears exist in the wild that work without repair.

This kit comes with all the capacitors needed to fix most versions of your Game Gear:

NOTES:

Soldering skills required, small components may be difficult for beginners. Simply remove all old aluminum capacitors from the board, and install the same value capacitors in their place.
Replace all 10uF and 4.7uF capacitors with 10uF surface mount capacitors. Replace all 4.7 and 10uF with 10uF. Replace all 22, 33, 68 and 100uF with 100uF.
This kit now comes with 1000uF instead of 820uF.

Good but not great

While these are small enough and compact, they do not have the same properties as the former caps do. This is especially evident in the sound board. The sound quality is not the same as the electrolytic caps help produce. Even though its more trouble, stick with the all electrolytic cap replacement kits.

All though a nice form factor extremely out of spec

I love the smd form factor. I have to say though the cap values are extremely out of spec. If they were 10 most 20% difference I wouldn't care but they only provide 3 different values (100uF, 10uF & 1uF) on average most of them are 50% out of spec and C1 is almost 70% . The real issue is trying to replace 10 different cap values with only the 3 that comes in the kit. Your Game Gear will work after installation but I couldnt say the long term damage that could these could cause.

I would highly recommend going with the other electrolytic capacitors set handheldlegends sell from Console 5

CAN be installed with just a soldering iron

Got these recently and installed with just a soldering iron, I have decent experience soldering components but haven’t had the most steady hands due to medications from surgery and was still able to get this done. Believe in yourself and you’ll be playing your game gear in no time!

Good easy install but!!!

The 3 electrolytic caps for the power supply in the kit where cheap Chinese Chang brand. 2 of the there where bad right out of the bag.

Not enough extras

I bought this kit with the goal to recap my game gear, but one of the 1uF capacitors broke in half when I was soldering it on. This kit only comes with two and two are required to recap a VA0 model, so I ended up making my console worse than it was before.

Perfect

Loved the ease of the surface mount and lack of need for orientation since polarity is not a factor
