Game Boy Backlight Display Mod V3 for DMG and GBP

I bought the RGB kit. First of all, they don't say you'll need other components to switch between different colors. I went off of the "pairs well with" section to order everything I would need to have everything I would need at once and assumed since they didn't mention I would need anything extra that it would could with the touch sensor to change colors that other sites have mentioned. It didn't so I was a bit annoyed by that.

While digging through the pages here, they have a diagram here with bad advice, telling you to solder it up backwards. I checked my leads and was confused by this but did it their way anyway which was incorrect as I thought. Could only get red to display when they were all wired up correctly. Apparently the others were DOA or their bad wiring advice led me to burn them out. So now I'm stuck with just red when I would have settled for White. My main intention with the RGB was to be able to produce the blue/white but I guess that's too much to ask for at this point.

Tutorials listed are from random YouTubers wiring up a non RGB version. Now, I run a shop and I make sure to include extensive information as well as correct diagrams and tutorials made by myself before listing a product.

The price is decent. It's not the most well built device but it doesn't have to be. It's a simple backlight so I can't complain. Leading users to install it incorrectly, relying on outside sources to explain their product for them and leaving out vital parts to make it function correctly without any notice is my issue with this.

The mod wasn’t that hard; I just followed This Does Not Compute’s video on the install. It came out really great though, it was definitely worth the 30 minutes it took.

This mod takes a lot of patience and time, But is the best option for preserving the original look/feel of the DMG. The light is very bright but can easily be dimmed to your liking by simply adding a resistor. The brightness is a plus for me as some may like it brighter and resistor dimming is very simple and cheap.

Currently using 1.5V rechargable lithium batteries to maintain constant voltage and the backlight is bright with good tone. The white works well under different lighting conditions. The nonuniform lit area is at the bottom of the screen but doesn't impact gameplay. I did trap a hair behind the lens and the screen is slightly offset, so I'll have to open it back up and adjust it slightly. Just take care while removing the reflective backing on the original LCD and you'll have a nice mod when you're done! The only additional thing I may do is snip a lead on OEM red LED since it's annoyingly bright and should extend the battery life. The LED doesn't go dim before shutdown with these batteries so it isn't a status light anymore.

This worked great and I was able to install by following the linked video. This was my first backlight and bivert mod. This is the washed yellow version, which IMO keeps the feel of the original display while improving the experience dramatically.

I did microscopic circuit board assembly for 2 years and found this very difficult. You absolutely have to use the slow cooling solder like in the video. Needless to say I ended up having to buy the new display with pcb in the end. Don’t buy if you have any doubts. Side note, I did test the screen light with a 3 volt battery and found that it had 4 bright spots on the bottom that lit the screen. I’m actually okay with my failure now.
